Half Truths and Just The Facts

Fact #1

What Rumpke Says:

  • The current Bond Road site has been a landfill since 1960s and is a small volume site. (Amanda Pratt of Rumpke per Local 12 News interview)

Just The Facts:

  • It is correct in stating that Bond Road site has been a landfill since the 1960s.  It was NOT owned by Rumpke but by Monsanto, a chemical company who has been and is currently in a number of lawsuits over health and environmental issues.  (per Ohio EPA)

Fact #2

What Rumpke Says:

  • Bond Road is a small volume site and will begin to accept 200-400 tons of trash daily. (per Rumpke Neighborhood Newsletter)

Just The Facts:

  • Rumpke’s filing with the Ohio EPA filing states that “the facility anticipates receiving a maximum of 4,000 tons of trash per day.”   Ten times what Rumpke has told the neighbors.  (per Ohio EPA filing)

Fact #3

What Rumpke Says:

  • Truck traffic will increase to 20-30 trucks per day. (per Rumpke Neighborhood Newsletter)

Just The Facts:

  • Looking at the Rumpke’s Ohio EPA filing of 4,000 tons of trash per day, that would equal to approximately 300 trucks per day-using an 8-hour work day. (per Ohio EPA filing)

Fact #4

What Rumpke Says:

  • Rumpke has no intention, nor are they planning to build a Mount Rumpke in Whitewater Township. (per Rumpke Neighborhood Newsletter)

Just The Facts:

  • We must look, not just at what Rumpke says but what Rumpke has done in the past at other sites.  Take a drive past the Colerain site.  Listen to the people of Colerain talk about the promises of “no more expansion needed for decades” only to be told a couple years later that yet another expansion would be needed.  (per Cincinnati Enquirer 8/10/2015 and from speaking to Colerain citizens)

Fact #5

What Rumpke Says:

  • Benefits include improved safety along Bond Road. (per Rumpke Neighborhood Newsletter)

Just The Facts:

  • The deficits outweigh and perceived benefits.  Increased traffic on Sand Run, which is already a well-travelled road with twists and turns; A hazard to the senior living community at Riverview at the bottom of the hill where trucks will enter and exit.  Bond Road may indeed be less travelled but everywhere else around will be a nightmare, not to mention the safety of the Indiana children at the elementary school only one mile away. (per examination of Rumpke’s planned expansion documents)

Fact #6

What Rumpke Says:

  • Odors from Rumpke Sanitary Landfill may be caused by gas, garbage or a combination.  In an effort to control odors, Rumpke installed a covering called an Odor Control Blanket. (per Hamilton County Environmental Services)

Just The Facts:

  • Odor complaints have been officially logged from 5 miles away from Mount Rumpke. (per Hamilton County Board of Health)
